Pregnancy yoga

I haven’t done yoga before, are the classes suitable for me?

Our classes cater for all levels of yoga students from beginners to advanced.  Our teachers are very experienced and qualified, and they will offer different levels of yoga poses in relevant situations.  The classes are, obviously, structured for the pregnant woman and therefore the poses are quite specific and gentle.  You don't need to have any previous yoga experience to enjoy the classes and you should feel the benefits for you and your baby within the first few classes.

How soon can I begin taking Pregnancy Yoga classes?

Women are welcome to join the yoga class at any time during their pregnancy but we advise avoiding other strenuous activities during the 11th to 14th week of pregnancy. Our pregnancy yoga classes are safe and  will help you to enjoy the sensations associated with pregnancy and will help prepare your body for the endurance often needed during labour.  The more you practice and the earlier you practice pregnancy yoga, the greater the benefits that you will enjoy. It is never "too late" to join the class. Women 32 weeks into their pregnancy have benefited after joining the classes.

Active birth yoga

Are your Active Birth Yoga classes a pre requisite for the Active Birth Workshop?

The Active Birth Yoga classes are not a pre requisite for the Active Birth Workshop, however women learn more and practice in weekly classes which helps the skills become more instinctive during the birth.

What is the difference between the Active Birth yoga classes and the Active Birth workshop with partners?

The Active Birth yoga classes are women only and  held weekly.  The focus is on preparing your mind and body for the birth process, and allows you to get to know your birthing body. You learn yoga postures and techniques that are specific to helping you have a positive and empowered birth experience.  We spend 1 hr 15 mins exploring each topic using different learning styles - knowledge, experiential body centred exercises, yoga postures and discussion. The eight topics are relaxation & mindfulness, releasing fears, optimal baby positioning, visualisation, breathing & vocalisation in labour, 1st & 2nd stage positioning. You can sign up here.

The Active Birth Workshop is specially designed for you and your birthing partner, providing your partner with hands on practical skills to support you during labour, through massage, active birthing positions and breathing techniques. Equipping your partner with the knowledge and skills is beneficial in labour as they can help you refocus. This workshop covers all the topics in the Active Birth yoga classes and more with the focus on your partner's involvement on the actual day.

What if I birth early?

Classes: If you give birth during your class expiry period (excluding monthly class pass) and you let us know, your unscheduled classes will be credited to mum and bubs yoga.

Active birth workshop & Private session

What is the difference between the workshops?

Check out our workshop comparison chart.

When should I attend the active birth  courses with my partner?

Most couples attend when the mother is between 30 and 37 weeks pregnant. It can be attended alongside the hospital antenatal classes as a good complementary course.

Does the Private session cover the same content as the Active birth workshop?

The Active Birth Private Sessions are 3 hours in duration and cover breathing techniques, massage skills of labour, and birthing positions for 1st and 2nd stage.  There are a condensed version of the workshop.   Review a comparison here.

Reasons you may prefer a private session are:

  • The dates of the Active Birth group workshops are not suitable

  • You live a distance away from our regular yoga classes or workshops

  • You do not like learning in a group situation

  • You have special needs. This might include a high profile public lifestyle, previous traumatic birth experience, special family circumstances, lack of support or medical issues

  • You prefer one-on-one learning environments.

Is 24-32 weeks too early to attend the active birth workshop

24 weeks is not too early to do the workshop with your partner.  You will learn some very helpful skills for labour that you can start practising early. You will receive a workbook and activity sheet which outlines the practices you can do earlier.  I suggest if you are able to attend the active birth yoga classes your will be practicing your skills on a weekly basis.  You can purchase the workshop and 8 active birth yoga classes for $513 (under better birth bundle in dropdown menu under BIRTH).

Can I attend the active birth courses instead of the hospital antenatal classes?

Yogababy’s Active birth workshop and Private sessions for couple’s compliment what you learn at the antenatal classes run by the hospitals. We are often referred by the hospital midwives who encourage their patients to come to Yogababy for further private birth preparation.  The active birth courses will give you the practical skills to apply during your labour & birth experience and often cover the birth journey and what to expect much more thoroughly than the hospital classes.

What if my baby arrives early and I have already paid for the workshop?

If you go into labour on the day of the workshop we will not issue any refund if you are over 37 weeks, which is considered full term, however we will offer a 50% refund for withdrawal due to premature labour.  To request a refund, please apply by email. Please refer to our terms & conditions.

Mum & bubs yoga

Do you offer trial classes?

Our Mums & bubs classes are ongoing so you can start anytime!  Due to the nature of the classes we don't offer trials. We offer a 5 week class pass for  you to try it out.  We recommend at least two x  5 class passes or a 10 class pass for the full benefits for you and your baby to be experienced.  You can book online here.

My baby is 8 weeks old, can we start now?

Yes, for babies 8 weeks to four months, gentle movements based on relaxation are beneficial.  Arm and leg movements prepare your baby for rolling over.  Relaxation is important as your baby’s body is very stiff, with arms and legs bent, and fists clenched; after the yogababy sequence your baby’s limbs will loosen up and your baby will sleep better.  Your baby may not do all of the yogababy sequence which is perfectly fine. You can do yoga for yourself when your baby is sleeping or resting.

What do I bring to a mums & bubs yoga class?

Yoga Mat, we have a supply of mats and yoga equipment you can use.  Bring a  rug/blanket for your baby to lie on, bottle of water and change bag.  There is a change table available.  Avoid bringing a pram as there is not much room, use a baby carrier if possible.  Complete  the postnatal student contract  for the teacher to review before the start of the class.  Please arrive 10 mins early.
